Marjan is Split’s backyard — a pine-covered peninsula rising above the western end of the old town. Locals jog here, swim here, and escape the summer heat under the trees. For visitors it’s the best free activity in Split.
Getting to the first viewpoint
From the Riva promenade, walk west through Varoš (the old fishing neighbourhood) and follow signs uphill. The first viewpoint is Vidilica café — 20 minutes of uphill walking. Coffee with a panoramic view of Split, the harbour, and the islands. This is enough for most visitors.
The full loop
Continue past Vidilica along the ridge trail for quieter paths through Aleppo pine forest. The full circuit takes 2–3 hours and passes several viewpoints, a small zoo, and medieval chapels carved into the cliff face (St. Nicholas and St. Jerome). The south side drops steeply to rocky swimming spots accessible by steps.
Swimming
The south coast of Marjan has several rocky beaches and concrete platforms. Kašjuni beach (west side) is the most popular — pebbly with a beach bar. The smaller coves between Kašjuni and the east end are quieter. The water is cleaner than the city beaches.
Tips
Bring water — there’s no shade on the initial uphill section and it’s hot in summer. Vidilica café has drinks but the trails beyond it don’t. The paths are well-marked but uneven in places. Free and open 24 hours — sunset from the south viewpoints is spectacular.
