Heading to Split? Mostar to Split follows the same route in reverse through the hinterland to the coast.
Book Mostar → Split →Split to Mostar is one of Dalmatia’s highest-demand cross-border day trips — 170 km east across the Imotski karst into Herzegovina, crossing the border at Kamensko. About 2h 40m direct or 4–5 hours with the standard sightseeing stops. Most bookings split between one-way transfers (travellers moving into Bosnia on a Balkan itinerary) and round-trip day excursions with wait time (visit Mostar, return to Split by evening).
Your driver leaves Split east on the local road through Solin and past Klis Fortress — the hilltop stronghold that featured as Meereen in HBO’s Game of Thrones. The road climbs to the Imotski karst plateau and drops into the town of Imotski itself, where the Blue Lake (Modro jezero) and Red Lake (Crveno jezero) are worth the short detour. The Croatian–Bosnian border at Kamensko / Gorica is our drivers’ preferred crossing — typically 5–15 minute waits, much faster than the coastal Neum route. From the border the road descends into the Herzegovina basin, passes the Kravica Waterfalls turnoff, and arrives at Mostar.
Three stops transform this transfer into a half-day experience. Klis Fortress (8 km from Split) for the medieval stronghold with panoramic views across central Dalmatia — 45 minutes including the short climb. Imotski Blue Lake for the 220-metre-deep karst crater lake, vivid turquoise in May–June when snowmelt fills it to 60+ metres — 30 minutes including the path descent. Kravica Waterfalls on the Bosnian side (15 km off the main road, 25-metre horseshoe fall) is the summer highlight — swimming possible June–September, 45–60 minute stop.
Spring (April–June) is ideal: Imotski Blue Lake at peak colour and depth, Kravica at peak flow, comfortable temperatures both ends. Summer (July–August) is busy — Mostar Old Town crowded with day-trippers 11:00–15:00, but the Kamensko back-road border stays fast even on summer Saturdays. Autumn is our favourite window for this route — Kravica still swimmable in early October, Imotski with autumn light, mild temperatures. Winter is fine for a direct transfer but Kravica swimming closes November–March and the Imotski plateau occasionally gets snow.
Mostar’s Old Town is small and walkable — you can cover Stari Most (the reconstructed 16th-century Ottoman bridge), the bazaar on both sides of the Neretva, Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque for the best bridge viewpoint, and the riverbanks in 2–3 hours. For lunch: šadrvan and Food House Mostar are the consistent local recommendations. Our driver drops at the nearest road access (Old Town lanes are pedestrian-only). Common add-ons after arrival: Blagaj Tekija (Dervish monastery 12 km south of Mostar) and onward to Sarajevo (130 km, 2 hours) if continuing the Balkan itinerary.
FlixBus runs 2–3 times daily Split–Mostar, takes 3h 30m–4 hours, costs €20–30 per person. Works but skips all scenic stops and drops you at Mostar’s distant bus station. Organised day tours from Split run daily at €50–80 per person but operate a fixed schedule with 30 strangers. Rental cars work but carry €50–80/day cross-border insurance. Private transfer is door-to-door from any Split address to any Mostar address, stops at Klis, Imotski, and Kravica at your pace. Many of our guests book as a round-trip day excursion — driver drops in Mostar, you have 4–5 hours there, same driver returns you to Split by evening. For 2–3 passengers this often beats group-tour cost per person.
