Quick answer

Lokrum Island is a 15-minute ferry from Dubrovnik's old port (€15 return). Car-free with rocky swimming spots, a saltwater Dead Sea lake, peacocks, and a botanical garden. Bring food — the island café is overpriced. Last ferry usually around 6pm.

Lokrum is Dubrovnik’s escape valve. When the old town gets too crowded and too hot, locals and visitors take the 15-minute ferry to this forested island just offshore. No cars, no hotels, no overnight stays — just swimming, shade, and peacocks.

Getting there

Ferries run from Dubrovnik’s old port every 30 minutes from 9am. Last ferry back is usually 6pm (check the posted schedule). €15 return ticket. The ride takes 15 minutes with nice views back to the old town walls.

The Dead Sea (Mrtvo More)

Lokrum’s highlight is a small saltwater lake on the island’s south side, connected to the sea by an underground channel. The water is warmer than the open sea and the swimming is sheltered. It gets busy by midday — arrive early for the best spots on the rocks around the edge.

Swimming spots

Rocky swimming areas are scattered around the island’s south and east coast. The rocks near the Benedictine monastery have easy sea access and clear water. Bring water shoes — the rocks can be sharp.

Peacocks and wildlife

Lokrum is home to a large population of peacocks that roam freely. They’re everywhere — paths, trees, picnic areas. The botanical garden near the monastery has subtropical plants and more wildlife.

Benedictine monastery ruins

A ruined 11th-century monastery in the centre of the island, surrounded by the botanical garden. The building houses a small Game of Thrones exhibition (the show filmed extensively in Dubrovnik). Free with your ferry ticket.

Fort Royal

A Napoleonic-era fortress at the island’s highest point. Short uphill walk from the monastery. Panoramic views of Dubrovnik, the Elafiti Islands, and the open Adriatic.

Tips

Bring food and water. The island café exists but is expensive and limited. Pack a picnic. There’s no fresh water on the island. Shade is plentiful under the pine trees but the swimming areas are exposed. Staying overnight on Lokrum is forbidden by law.
