Perast is the most photogenic village in the Bay of Kotor — a row of baroque stone palaces facing two islands against a mountain backdrop. It’s 15 minutes north of Kotor and a standard stop on any transfer along the bay.
Our Lady of the Rocks
The larger of Perast’s two islands is man-made — local sailors built it over centuries by dropping rocks and sinking old ships. The church on top dates to 1630 and is filled with silver votive tablets left by sailors thanking the Virgin Mary for safe voyages. The collection is remarkable — 2,500 silver and gold plates. Boat from Perast’s waterfront: €5, takes 5 minutes. Church entry: €2.
Perast village
One main road along the waterfront, a handful of restaurants, and a museum in the Bujović Palace (€3). No cars in the main strip. Walk from one end to the other in 10 minutes. The views across the bay from the waterfront cafés are exceptional. Try fresh fish or mussels at one of the waterfront restaurants — reasonable prices for the setting.
Tips
Morning light is best for photos — the village faces east and is lit beautifully before noon. In summer, visit before 11am to avoid tour bus crowds. The boat ride is short but bring a layer — it can be breezy on the water.
Getting there
Perast is on the main road along the Bay of Kotor, between Kotor and Herceg Novi. We stop here on all Dubrovnik-to-Kotor and Kotor-to-Dubrovnik transfers — it adds about 30 minutes to the journey.
