Trogir is what Dubrovnik might look like without the cruise ships. A tiny island connected to the mainland by a bridge, packed with 2,300 years of history, UNESCO-listed since 1997, and small enough to see in half a day. It’s 30 minutes from Split and makes an easy side trip.
Walk the old town
The entire island is the old town — you can cross it in 5 minutes but you’ll want much longer. Marble streets, Romanesque and Gothic buildings, small squares with café tables, and the Riva waterfront promenade. Free to walk, no entrance fee. Best in the early morning or evening when day-trippers have left.
See Radovan’s Portal
The west entrance to the Cathedral of St. Lawrence features a portal carved by Master Radovan in 1240 — the finest example of Romanesque sculpture in Croatia. The carvings depict scenes from daily life, the seasons, and biblical stories. The cathedral interior has a Renaissance chapel worth seeing. Entry €5.
Climb Kamerlengo Fortress
A 15th-century Venetian fortress at the western tip of the island. Climb to the top for panoramic views over the harbour, the old town, and Čiovo island across the channel. Entry €5. In summer it hosts open-air cinema screenings. Allow 30 minutes.
Swim on Čiovo island
Cross the bridge from the old town to Čiovo island for beaches. Okrug Gornji on the south side has the longest beach — pebbly with clear water and beach bars. Locals prefer the smaller coves along the island’s west coast. A 10-minute walk from the old town.
Where to eat
Trogir’s waterfront restaurants serve excellent seafood at prices below Split. Grilled fish, black risotto, and local wine from the Kaštela hills. The Riva promenade has the views; the back streets have the value.
How long to stay
Half a day covers the old town, cathedral, and fortress. One night lets you see Trogir at its best — in the evening after the day-trippers leave, the marble streets are magical. Combine with Split for a 3-night stay.
