The Day

Kotor to Skadar Lake, how the day works

A private round-trip from Kotor with your driver waiting — from €160 per vehicle, door-to-door. Fuel and an English-speaking driver included; the boat trip, tastings and lunch are extra.

It's a little over an hour inland from Kotor to Lake Skadar — allow longer on summer afternoons, when the two-lane Kotor–Budva coast road is the region's worst bottleneck — the largest lake in the Balkans, straddling Montenegro and Albania; the Montenegrin two thirds has been a national park since 1983, and the whole lake is a Ramsar wetland site. The classic first stop is the Pavlova Strana viewpoint, where the Rijeka Crnojevića river bends in a perfect horseshoe below the road.

The heart of the day is a boat trip on the lake — gliding through fields of water lilies, past fishing hamlets and island monasteries, with a real chance of spotting pelicans and herons among the 280-plus bird species. Add a tasting at a Crmnica vineyard and a lunch of fresh lake carp, and it's the most relaxed day trip in the region.

Because it's private, the pace is gentle and yours: a long boat trip, a wine stop, a quiet lunch. Your driver waits throughout and returns you to Kotor door-to-door.
