Sarajevo's Olympic mountain — host of the 1984 Winter Olympics. Year-round destination with skiing in winter, hiking and mountain biking in summer. Fresh mountain air about 45 minutes from the city centre.
Jahorina is Sarajevo's Olympic mountain — host of the 1984 Winter Olympics, peak elevation 1,916m. From Sarajevo it's a 30 km drive south-east and up the mountain road, about 45–60 minutes depending on conditions (longer in winter snow). Today Jahorina is one of the best-value ski destinations in Europe (lift passes are set each season by the Olympic Centre and sold in convertible marks; a key-card deposit is charged on top) and an underrated summer hiking + mountain biking destination.
Most guests do this as a half-day or full-day depending on activity. Winter ski day = 8–10 hours (early pickup, full ski day, evening return). Summer hiking day = 6–8 hours. Off-season visits to see the abandoned Olympic sites are 4–5 hour half-days.
The 30 km route runs south-east out of Sarajevo and climbs to the resort on the Istočno Sarajevo side, climbing from 540 m in the Sarajevo basin to the Jahorina ski area, whose base sits at about 1,300 m and whose top station reaches 1,890 m. Mountain road with switchbacks; in winter the upper sections require winter tyres (required by Bosnian law through the winter months — our vehicles are equipped) and occasionally chains. We run snow-rated vehicles year-round on this route.
Realistic drive time: 45 minutes outside winter snow conditions; 60–75 minutes in heavy snow. The road is regularly cleared (Jahorina is a major ski destination for Bosnia + Serbia + Montenegro markets) but driving the serpentines requires experience. Foreign drivers in rental cars regularly struggle with the climb in winter.
Per vehicle, not per person. Includes your driver, fuel, and door-to-door service. Round-trip available. Lift passes, equipment hire and lunch are paid on the day.
“From” prices are a guide. Your final price is confirmed on quote and may vary with the date, route, stops, vehicle and number of passengers. Prices are subject to change until your booking is confirmed.
About 45 minutes outside winter snow; 60–75 minutes in heavy snow. 30 km on the M-18 mountain road south of Sarajevo, climbing from 540 m to the ski area base at about 1,300 m.
The road is regularly cleared and major resorts depend on it. With winter tires (required in Bosnia through the winter months) and experience, manageable. For foreign drivers in rental cars unfamiliar with mountain serpentines, a private driver is significantly safer. We run snow-rated vehicles year-round.
Lift pass: set each season by the Olympic Centre and sold in convertible marks, plus a key-card deposit (one of the best-value ski deals in Europe). Equipment rental, mountain restaurant meals and day spa access at the resort hotels are all priced by the individual operators and paid on the day — check current rates before you travel. Add to the transfer for full day cost.
Early December to early or mid April, depending on the season the resort announces. December and late March are shoulder months with variable snow; January and February are the most reliable. Snow guns supplement natural snow on the lower runs.
Yes — June–September. Best trails: the Jahorina summit ridge (panoramic views over Sarajevo and Republika Srpska) and the alpine meadow loops near the resort base. The Trebević viewpoints and the abandoned Olympic bobsled track are on a separate mountain above Sarajevo, not walkable from Jahorina — we can fold them into the drive home instead. Most trails are well-marked but uneven; sturdy hiking shoes essential.
Yes. Jahorina hosted the women's Alpine skiing events. The Olympic ski runs are still in use. The famous abandoned bobsled track is on Trebević, directly above Sarajevo — about 20 minutes from the city, and most of the way back down from Jahorina. Photographic, melancholy, free to walk.
