Matka is a steep river gorge that was dammed into a still, emerald lake ringed by cliffs. From the trailhead you can kayak on the lake, walk the shoreline path, and take a short boat to the Vrelo cave — the show cave you walk through is dry, and the flooded shaft beneath it is described as one of the deepest known underwater caves in the Balkans. The lakeside path leads in 10–15 minutes to St Andrew (Sveti Andrea), founded in 1389, which stands on a low platform beside the Treska just below the dam. The genuinely clifftop monastery, St Nikola Šiševski, is a steep climb of about an hour and does not fit a half-day alongside the kayak and the cave boat.
