Kotor is tucked at the very end of the Bay of Kotor — a fjord-like inlet that's one of the most dramatic natural harbours in Europe. Getting here is half the experience, but getting onward by public transport is limited. There's no train, buses are infrequent, and the nearest international airport is Tivat (8 km) or Dubrovnik (93 km across the border).
The Bay of Kotor road itself is an adventure — single-lane in stretches, with blind corners along the waterfront and the infamous Serpentine to Lovćen with 25 hairpin bends. For visitors arriving from Dubrovnik, the border crossing at Debeli Brijeg can queue for 30+ minutes in summer. Our drivers know which crossing to use and when.
Transfers from Kotor connect primarily to the Croatian coast (Dubrovnik, Split) and within Montenegro (Budva, Podgorica, Tivat). The Dubrovnik connection is our most popular — many travellers combine the transfer with a Bay of Kotor sightseeing loop, stopping at Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks on the way out.
Seasonal tips
Jun–Aug: Cruise ship central. Up to 4 ships dock daily, flooding tiny Kotor with thousands of visitors. Book early-morning departures to avoid congestion. The Dubrovnik border can hit 45+ minutes on summer weekends.
Apr–May, Sep–Oct: Perfect season. The bay is warm enough for swimming, crowds thin dramatically, and the Serpentine road to Lovćen is clear and dry.
Nov–Mar: Quiet and beautiful. Some bay-side restaurants close, but Kotor's old town is atmospheric in winter. The Lovćen road may close in snow.
Tivat Airport: Only 8 km from Kotor but has limited routes. Many visitors fly into Dubrovnik and transfer to Kotor — one of our most booked routes.
