Ljubljana to Lake Bohinj — what to expect

Lake Bohinj is the largest natural lake in Slovenia, set inside Triglav National Park — 83 km north-west of Ljubljana via the A2 motorway and the Bohinjska Bistrica valley road. The drive is about 1h 15m and passes Lake Bled on the way.

Bohinj is a quieter alternative to Bled: fewer tour buses, more space along the shoreline, and direct access to alpine hikes (Mostnica Gorge, Savica Waterfall, Vogel cable car). The lake village of Ribčev Laz is the typical drop-off point; we can also drop at Ukanc at the western shore for the Vogel cable car or Savica Waterfall trail.

Optional combinations

  • Bled + Bohinj day — both lakes in one transfer (request a quote)
  • Savica Waterfall — 30-min uphill walk from Ukanc parking
  • Vogel cable car — 1500m peak with restaurant; ticket bought at venue
💡 Insider tip: The lake is swimmable from mid-June to early September. The water is cold but clear. Bring a towel and water shoes for pebble shores.
