Heading to Tirana? Sarandë to Tirana follows the same riviera road back over the pass to the capital.
Book Sarandë → Tirana →Tirana to Sarandë is Albania’s signature coastal transfer — about 290 km from the capital down the Albanian Riviera to the country’s southernmost beach town on the Ionian Sea. About 4–5 hours direct, or 6–7 hours with the coastal stops. Most bookings are one-way, either for travellers heading to Ksamil and the Butrint archaeological site, or for those catching the Sarandë–Corfu ferry for an onward Greek island crossing.
Your driver heads south from Tirana on the SH1 motorway past Durrës (Albania’s main port and Roman-era amphitheatre site), Kavajë, and Fier. At Vlorë, Albania’s third-largest city and the Adriatic–Ionian Sea meeting point, the road turns onto the SH8 coastal route — the Albanian Riviera. The signature moment is the Llogara Pass at 1,027 metres: the winding climb through Llogara National Park ends with a sudden reveal of the Ionian Sea laid out below — one of the Mediterranean’s great road reveals. From the pass the road descends through Dhërmi, Himarë, and Porto Palermo before reaching Sarandë on the southern coast.
Three stops transform the drive into a coastal experience. Dhërmi, 35 km south of Llogara Pass, has Albania’s most celebrated pebble beach and a Byzantine monastery above the village — 45 minutes for a photo stop and coffee, longer for a swim. Himarë, 20 km further, is a small resort town with a castle ruin and the Balkan Riviera’s best sunset beaches. Porto Palermo, just before Sarandë, has Ali Pasha’s triangular fortress jutting into a turquoise bay — a legitimate 20-minute stop. The Blue Eye spring (Syri i Kaltër), 22 km inland from Sarandë, is a karst spring where water emerges from an unknown depth — a 45-minute detour worth the drive.
The Albanian Riviera is fully seasonal. Peak season is mid-June to mid-September — all beach clubs, restaurants, and hotels operational, swimming excellent. Shoulder months (May–early June, late September–October) are mild and far quieter; ideal if you want the scenery without the high-season crowds. November–April much of the Riviera shuts down — Sarandë itself stays open but beach towns like Dhërmi and Himarë become very quiet. Llogara Pass occasionally closes in winter for snow (rare but possible). Border queues for onward travel to Greece or Montenegro can be significant in peak summer.
Sarandë is a compact seaside city facing the Greek island of Corfu across a narrow 5 km strait. Our driver drops you at any hotel or the ferry port. From Sarandë: the Sarandë–Corfu ferry takes 30 minutes and runs 3–6 times daily in season; Butrint UNESCO archaeological site is 18 km south (25 min), one of Albania’s most important Roman sites; Ksamil village with its turquoise-water beaches is 17 km south (20 min); the Greek border at Kakavija is 65 km east if continuing overland into Greece.
Bus runs 5–7 times daily Tirana–Sarandë, takes 6–7 hours, costs €15–25 per person — the cheap option but it skips Dhërmi and Himarë and doesn’t stop for photos on Llogara Pass. No train. No flights (Sarandë has no airport). Rental cars work but Albanian driving is demanding on coastal roads and mountain passes; parking is limited in Sarandë’s centre. Private transfer is door-to-door, allows Llogara and Riviera stops at your pace, and for 2+ passengers usually competes well on price per person against bus combinations. Common booking: morning Tirana departure, long Llogara and Dhërmi stops, arrive Sarandë in time for sunset.
