Konjic & the Neretva canyon

70 km from Sarajevo ~25 min

An elegant Ottoman bridge spans the Neretva in this riverside town. Walk across the 17th-century bridge, browse traditional woodcarving workshops, or stretch your legs along the river promenade. Konjic is also the gateway to rafting on the Neretva—one of Europe's best whitewater rivers.

Traveling the other way? Mostar to Sarajevo follows the same canyon road in reverse, climbing from the Neretva valley up through the mountains to the capital.

About the Sarajevo to Mostar transfer

Sarajevo to Mostar reverses Bosnia’s busiest internal transfer route — 130 km through the Neretva canyon to Herzegovina’s iconic bridge city. About 2 hours direct, or 3–4 hours with the standard sightseeing stops. The route descends from Sarajevo’s Alpine mountain basin into Mediterranean Herzegovina, with temperatures typically rising 8–10°C between start and finish. Most bookings are one-way as part of a longer Balkan itinerary where Mostar is the next overnight; day-trip bookings (Sarajevo → Mostar → Sarajevo with waiting time) are also common.

The route itself

Your driver heads south out of Sarajevo’s Miljacka valley, climbing to the Ivan Sedlo pass (950m) — the 20 minutes that define this drive geographically. South of the pass the landscape transforms: pine forests give way to Mediterranean scrub, Cyrillic road signs alternate with Latin, and the Neretva river begins its canyon run. The road follows the river past Konjic (Ottoman bridge and Tito’s Cold War bunker) and Jablanica (WWII Battle of Neretva museum) through a gorge of vertical limestone cliffs and turquoise water. Mostar emerges at the canyon’s southern end, where the river widens and the landscape opens into the Herzegovina basin.

Optional stops worth adding

Konjic (60 km from Sarajevo) is the first natural stop: Ottoman bridge (1682, reconstructed 2009), Tito’s declassified nuclear bunker ARK D-0 (6,500 sqm, now an art museum — needs pre-booking), and rafting departures for the upper Neretva. Jablanica (80 km) is the Battle of Neretva stop: WWII museum beside the wrecked 1943 railway bridge, plus the famous lamb-roast restaurants (Zdrava Voda, Radava) that line the valley. Both stops together add 2 hours to the direct drive — most guests pick one for a proper stop and a photo at the other.

When to go and what to expect

April–June and September–October are ideal: mild both ends, full Neretva canyon visibility, light traffic. July–August fine but the road is busy with day-trippers heading south to Dubrovnik; the Ivan Sedlo pass itself stays cool even in peak summer. November–March the pass can have snow and fog — plan 30–60 extra minutes and note that some of the photo-stop viewpoints close in winter. Our drivers use winter tyres October through April.

Arrival in Mostar

Mostar’s Old Town is small and walkable — you can see Stari Most (the reconstructed 16th-century Ottoman bridge, UNESCO World Heritage), the Ottoman bazaar on both sides of the river, Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque (for the best Old Bridge viewpoint in town), and the riverbanks in 2–3 hours. For lunch šadrvan and Food House Mostar are the consistent local recommendations. Our driver drops you at the nearest road access since the Old Town lanes are pedestrian-only. Common add-ons: Blagaj Tekija (600-year-old Dervish monastery, 12 km from Mostar) and Kravica Waterfalls (40 km, swimming possible June–September).

Why private transfer vs alternatives

Bus runs 5–6 times daily Sarajevo–Mostar, takes 2h 30m–3 hours, and costs €10–15 per person — the cheap option if you don’t want stops. Train runs once daily (10:20 AM from Sarajevo) in about 2 hours, with limited luggage. Rental cars work but the Ivan Sedlo pass demands attention in winter. Private transfer is door-to-door, stops wherever you like, includes all fuel and tolls, and for 2–3 passengers often beats bus + inter-city taxi per person. Many guests book this as a day trip with wait time — driver drops in Mostar, you spend 4–5 hours there, same driver returns you to Sarajevo by evening.
