The Journey

Banja Luka to Mostar, stop by stop

Drive from Banja Luka to Mostar in about 4h 25m. Private transfer from €300 per vehicle, all-inclusive — fuel, English-speaking driver, door-to-door.

A

Banja Luka

Your hotel or address Departure

Pickup anywhere in the city — a hotel on Gospodska, the Kastel fortress end of the riverbank, or an address out towards Laktasi. The road leaves south along the Vrbas and enters its canyon within twenty minutes, which is the best scenery of the first hour.

★

Jajce

64 km from Banja Luka ~1h 10m

The natural first stop and close enough to the start that nobody is tired of the car yet. Jajce has a 22-metre waterfall inside the town where the Pliva drops into the Vrbas, a fortress above it where the last Bosnian king was crowned in 1461, and the hall where the second AVNOJ session met in November 1943. The Pliva lakes and their wooden watermills sit 6 km upstream.

★

Bugojno and the Makljen pass

132 km from Banja Luka ~2h 45m

Through Donji Vakuf and Bugojno, then the climb to Makljen and the watershed. Past the top the streams run south to the Adriatic instead of north to the Sava — from here the drive is downhill in the literal sense. Rama lake follows on the left, long and green, with a monastery on the peninsula above it.

★

Jablanica

176 km from Banja Luka ~3h 35m

Where the road meets the Neretva and turns south for the last stretch. Jablanica is the standard lunch halt on this corridor: roadside restaurants grilling lamb on a spit all day, and the wrecked railway bridge left in the river below the road since 1943 and kept as a museum.

B

Mostar

Your hotel or address Arrival

The final hour runs down the Neretva gorge, the same stretch the Sarajevo road uses, with the river widening and the light changing as Herzegovina opens out. Drop-off anywhere in Mostar — the Old Bridge quarter, a hotel on the river, or an address out in Bijelo Polje.

About the Banja Luka to Mostar transfer

Banja Luka to Mostar is 232 km and takes about 4 hours 25 minutes. Both cities are in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so there are no border posts, no passport checks and one currency — the Convertible Mark, KM — from door to door. The entity line between Republika Srpska and the Federation is crossed somewhere around Jajce and there is nothing to stop for; most passengers never notice it.

There is no motorway on this route and no direct railway, which is where four and a half hours for 232 km comes from. The road runs south from Banja Luka down the Vrbas canyon to Jajce, west through Donji Vakuf and Bugojno, over the Makljen pass, then down the Rama valley to Jablanica and along the Neretva into Mostar. It does not pass Travnik, which sits 22 km east, and it does not go near Sarajevo, which is 55 km further east again.

It is slower than the longer drive to Sarajevo

Banja Luka to Sarajevo is 256 km — 24 km further — and takes about an hour less, because that road is better for most of its length. If you are planning a route through Bosnia, this is worth knowing: distance is a poor guide to time here, and the Mostar road is the slower of the two despite being shorter.

Why a private transfer

The bus takes six to seven hours and usually involves a change, because timetables are built around Sarajevo rather than the direct road. A car does it in four and a half, stops at Jajce if you want it to, and puts you at a hotel door in Mostar rather than at a terminal on the edge of town. In winter the Makljen pass holds snow and we plan the departure around that.

Worth building into the drive

  • Jajce — a 22-metre waterfall in the middle of the town, an hour and ten from the start
  • Pliva lakes — wooden watermills on the water, 6 km above Jajce
  • Rama lake — the reservoir after the Makljen pass, monastery on the peninsula
  • Jablanica — lamb on a spit, and the 1943 bridge still lying in the river
Stop at Jajce rather than later. It comes about a quarter of the way in, which feels early, but everything after Bugojno is mountain road and the next comfortable halt is Jablanica two hours further on.
Route FAQ

Banja Luka to Mostar — common questions

Everything specific to this route.

How long does the drive from Banja Luka to Mostar take?

+

About 4 hours 25 minutes for 232 km without stops. There is no motorway on this route, so the time comes from the road rather than the distance. With a stop at Jajce, plan for five and a half hours.

Is there a border crossing between Banja Luka and Mostar?

+

No. Both cities are in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the drive is entirely domestic — no border posts, no passport checks, one currency. You cross the entity line between Republika Srpska and the Federation, which is not a border and has nothing to stop for.

Does the route go through Sarajevo?

+

No. The direct road runs west of Sarajevo, about 55 km away from it. Going by way of the capital would add well over an hour.

Can we stop in Jajce?

+

Yes, and it is the stop we suggest. Jajce is about an hour and ten minutes in, the waterfall is a short walk from where the car parks, and it breaks the drive before the mountain section rather than after it.

What does the transfer cost?

+

From €300 per vehicle rather than per person, including fuel and an English-speaking driver. A minivan for a larger group is €380. The price is confirmed before the trip, not metered.

Is the road hard in winter?

+

The Makljen pass between Bugojno and Prozor-Rama is the section that holds snow. It is cleared and driven all winter, but between December and March we often suggest an earlier departure so the pass is crossed in daylight.
