About the Sarajevo to Split transfer

Sarajevo to Split is one of the Balkans’ signature full-day transfers — 280 km from Bosnia’s Alpine capital to Croatia’s Adriatic heart. About 4h 15m direct, or 6–7 hours with the classic Mostar + Kravica + Imotski stops. Most travellers book this as a one-way completing a Balkan-to-Dalmatia itinerary, typically continuing from Split to island ferries (Hvar, Brač) or flights from Split Airport (SPU).

The route itself

Your driver leaves Sarajevo south over the Ivan Sedlo pass (950m), descends along the Neretva canyon through Konjic and Jablanica, and reaches Mostar — where most transfers take a 60–90 minute stop for Stari Most and a lunch. From Mostar the route heads west across the Herzegovina plateau, crossing into Croatia at the Kamensko border — the quieter back-road crossing rather than the coastal Neum highway. The Croatian side runs through the Imotski karst region past the Blue Lake, joins the A1 motorway near Trilj, and reaches Split with an optional Klis Fortress stop just above the city.

Optional stops worth the time

Three high-value stops define this route. Mostar for Stari Most, the Ottoman bazaar, and lunch at šadrvan or Food House Mostar (60–90 minutes). Kravica Waterfalls, 40 km west of Mostar off the main road — a 25-metre horseshoe fall with summer swimming (45 minutes detour). Imotski Blue Lake on the Croatian side — a 220-metre-deep karst crater, turquoise in May–June (30 minutes). For full-day transfers with all three stops, plan an 8:00 AM Sarajevo pickup and 18:00–19:00 Split arrival.

When to go and what to expect

April–June and September–October are the best windows: mild both ends, full Neretva canyon visibility, Imotski Blue Lake at peak, light border queues at Kamensko. July–August is busy but feasible — expect Mostar Old Town crowded 11:00–15:00. Winter needs planning: Ivan Sedlo pass gets snow and fog December–March, adding 30–60 minutes. Our drivers use winter tyres October through April.

Arrival in Split

Split is built around Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO-listed 4th-century Roman emperor’s retirement complex that now forms half the Old Town. Our driver drops you at the Riva waterfront, 3 minutes’ walk from the Palace’s central Peristyle. Ferries to Hvar, Brač, and other islands depart Trajektna Luka port 5 minutes from the Riva. Marjan hill for the best city viewpoints is 10 minutes west. For onward travel: Trogir 25 km north, Split Airport (SPU) 25 km north, overnight ferries to Italy from the same port.

Why private transfer vs alternatives

Bus runs 3–4 times daily Sarajevo–Split via Mostar, takes 7–8 hours with a change in Mostar, costs €20–35 per person. Works but exhausting; you lose all scenic stops. No direct train. Flying Sarajevo → Split via Zagreb requires 5–8 hours door-to-door with connections. Rental cars have the €50–80/day cross-border insurance surcharge plus the Ivan Sedlo mountain pass and Imotski driving. Private transfer is door-to-door from any Sarajevo address to any Split address or ferry port, stops at Mostar and Kravica at your pace, and for 2+ passengers is usually competitive on price per person. Best booking pattern: one-way on the travel day with 90-minute Mostar lunch stop, arriving Split refreshed for island ferry departures the next morning.
