Day Trips from Sarandë

Sarandë is the base for the southern Albanian Riviera — the country's best beaches, its finest ancient city and a famous spring are all a short drive away. Every trip includes hotel pickup and an English-speaking driver.

Quick answer

The best day trips from Sarandë are Butrint (~30 min, from €120), Albania's UNESCO ancient city in a lagoon-side national park; Ksamil, the turquoise Riviera beaches with their swim-to islands, 17 km south; and the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër), a vividly clear natural spring a short detour inland. All private and door-to-door — and because they're close together, they pair easily in a day.

Butrint

Sarandë → Butrint day trip →

The most complete ancient city in Albania, just 30 minutes south — a UNESCO-listed ruin layered through Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian times, all on one walking loop in a wooded national park beside a lagoon. A Greek theatre, baptistery mosaics, a basilica, city walls and a Venetian castle on the hill.

Duration: 4–5 hours (half day) | Drive: ~30 min each way Highlights: Greek theatre, baptistery mosaics, Venetian castle, lagoon setting

Ksamil

Just 4 km north of Butrint and 17 km south of Sarandë, Ksamil is the postcard of the Albanian Riviera — white sand, shallow turquoise water and a scatter of tiny islands you can swim or wade out to. The classic pairing is Butrint in the cooler morning and Ksamil’s beaches in the afternoon.

Duration: Half day to full day | Drive: ~20 min each way Highlights: White-sand beaches, swim-to islands, turquoise shallows

The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër)

A short detour inland toward Gjirokastra, the Blue Eye is a natural spring of astonishing clarity — water welling up a deep blue from an underwater cave, ringed by forest. A quick, memorable stop, easily added to a Butrint or Ksamil day. Vehicles no longer drive to the spring itself: the driver parks at the entrance off the main road and the last stretch is covered on foot or by the shuttle buggies that run from the gate. There is a small entry fee, paid in cash at the gate.

Duration: 1–2 hours as a stop | Drive: ~30 min each way, plus the walk or shuttle in from the gate Highlights: Deep-blue spring, forest setting, boardwalk viewpoint
