Berat
The classic day trip from the capital, about two hours south. Berat is the UNESCO “city of a thousand windows” — tiers of white Ottoman houses climbing both banks of the Osum river beneath a still-inhabited hilltop castle, with Byzantine churches and the 16th-century Onufri icons inside the walls.

Kruja
The closest trip to the capital — 40 minutes up the mountain to Kruja, the 15th-century stronghold of Albania’s national hero Skanderbeg. His restored castle holds the Skanderbeg Museum, and just below runs a cobbled Ottoman-era bazaar of crafts and antiques, with long views down to the Adriatic. An easy half-day.

Gjirokastra
Farther south — about 2.5 hours — is Gjirokastra, the UNESCO “city of stone”, a slope of grey Ottoman houses beneath one of the largest castles in the Balkans. The fortress holds an arms museum and a Cold-War-era American plane, with long views over the Drino valley. A long but rewarding day, or a stop on the way to the coast.

Ksamil & the Riviera
The southern Riviera — Ksamil’s turquoise beaches and swim-to islands, the UNESCO ancient city of Butrint, and the Blue Eye spring, around Sarandë at the bottom of the country. It’s 4–5 hours each way over the Llogara Pass, so it works best as an overnight or the start of a longer coastal trip rather than a single day.

Theth
A long, spectacular full day into the Accursed Mountains — up the paved Boga pass to the stone-tower village of Theth, with time for the Grunas waterfall before the drive back. It’s about four hours each way, so you leave very early. The Blue Eye of Theth is a much longer walk and realistically needs an overnight. For an overnight or the Theth–Valbona pass trek, take the one-way transfer instead.

Bovilla Lake

The capital’s favourite half-day escape — 45 minutes to the emerald Bovilla reservoir, then a short but steep self-guided hike up Gamti Mountain to the cliff-top viewpoint high above the water. The driver waits at the trailhead. Pairs naturally with Kruja on the same side of the city.

Mount Dajti

The “balcony of Tirana” — a 25-minute drive to the Dajti Ekspres cable car, then a glide up the forested mountain for sweeping views over the city and the plain to the Adriatic. Easy walking trails, viewpoints and restaurants at the top. The cable-car ticket is bought there and isn’t included.

Apollonia
One of the great ancient cities of the Balkans — Apollonia, founded by Greek colonists and grand under Rome, spread over quiet hills near Fier. Its restored Bouleuterion colonnade, the odeon and old walls, and a 13th-century monastery whose buildings house the archaeological museum. About two hours each way, and it pairs well with Berat.

Lake Koman ferry
One of Europe’s great boat rides, as a long day from the capital — an early private drive north to the Koman jetty, then the ferry gliding through a steep, fjord-like gorge on the flooded Drin river. It’s an ambitious 12–14 hour day; the ferry ticket and schedule are separate. Prefer to skip the boat? We also drive all the way to Valbonë by road.
