Heading back? Budva to Dubrovnik follows the same coastal route in reverse past Kotor and through the bay.
Book Budva → Dubrovnik →Dubrovnik to Budva is the most common Montenegro beach transfer — 105 km, one border at Debeli Brijeg, around 2h 15m direct. Budva Riviera is Montenegro’s main summer destination: a walled 2,500-year-old Old Town on a rocky peninsula, 20 km of beaches stretching south to Petrovac, and the iconic Sveti Stefan island just 10 minutes further. Most bookings are one-way on arrival in Dubrovnik, then travellers stay 3–5 nights on the riviera before continuing or returning.
Your driver heads south from Dubrovnik along the D8 Adriatic Highway, past Cavtat and Dubrovnik Airport (DBV). At Gruda the road reaches the border crossing at Karasovići / Debeli Brijeg. After the border the road drops into Boka Kotorska via Herceg Novi, runs around the fjord-like bay past Perast and Kotor, then cuts through the Sozina tunnel (4.2 km, opened 2005) which saves 40 minutes over the old coastal route. The tunnel emerges onto the Budva Riviera with the Adriatic on your right the rest of the way.
Two stops are almost always worth the extra time. Kotor Old Town, 22 km before Budva, has the UNESCO-listed walled core, Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, and the famous San Giovanni fortress hike (1,350 steps, best view in Montenegro) — budget 90 minutes for a walk, 3+ hours for the fortress. Perast, 12 km before Kotor, is a 17th-century Venetian town with Gospa od škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rocks) man-made island church just offshore. A 30-minute Perast stop plus a short boat ride is the common combination.
Budva is the most seasonal destination on our route map. Peak summer (July–August) is busy, loud, and hot; swimming is perfect, nightlife is intense, prices high. Shoulder season (May–early June, September–mid October) is the sweet spot: warm enough to swim, far fewer crowds, restaurants and beach clubs still fully operational. November–April Budva is quiet — many beach bars close, but the Old Town, hotels, and restaurants stay open. Border queues at Karasovići can hit 30–60 minutes on summer Saturdays.
Budva’s Old Town is tiny and walled — our driver drops you at the nearest accessible road. The 15th-century Citadel, the Santa Maria in Punta church (1440), and the waterfront promenade make up the core. Just outside: Mogren Beach (the best free beach in the centre), Slovenska plaža (the big 1.5 km main strip), and Becici and Rafailovići as quieter beach suburbs to the south. Sveti Stefan (the postcard-famous island resort, now an Aman property) is 10 km south of Budva — you can’t walk onto the island without a reservation but the viewpoint from the coast road is one of Montenegro’s most photographed spots. For onward travel: Tivat Airport (TIV) is 25 km north (30 min), Kotor 22 km north (25 min), Bar 38 km south (40 min), Podgorica 65 km inland (1h 15m).
There’s no direct bus Dubrovnik–Budva — you change in Herceg Novi, taking 4+ hours total with irregular connections. Organised day tours from Dubrovnik cost €40–70 per person but run to a fixed schedule. Rental cars carry €50–80/day cross-border insurance surcharge and you handle the border yourself. A private transfer is usually cheaper per person than bus + taxi combinations, delivers door-to-door, and lets you stop at Kotor and Perast at your pace. For airport arrivals to Dubrovnik (DBV) continuing to Budva, we meet you at arrivals — many guests book on the plane and we’re waiting when they land.
Everything specific to this route.
About 2 hours 15 minutes (105 km). Border adds 5–20 minutes. With a Kotor stop, plan for about 3 hours.
Absolutely. Kotor is right on the route and a highlight of Montenegro. A quick walk through the Old Town takes 20–30 minutes; climbing the fortress walls takes about an hour.
One crossing from Croatia into Montenegro at Debeli Brijeg. Driver manages all documents. EU/UK/US/CA/AU citizens enter visa-free. Peak summer can mean 20–30 minute waits.
An island village connected to the mainland by a causeway—now a luxury Aman resort. You can't visit the island without a reservation, but the viewpoint from the road is one of the most photographed spots in Montenegro.

The Old Town is atmospheric but compact. Slovenska Beach is the main strip. Becici and Rafailovici are quieter beach suburbs just south. Driver drops you at any of these.
