Heading to Dubrovnik? Podgorica to Dubrovnik reverses this route, descending from the mountains to the coast.
Book Podgorica → Dubrovnik →Dubrovnik to Podgorica is the Croatia–Montenegro administrative transfer — 160 km across one border to Montenegro’s capital and its main domestic airport (TGD). About 2h 45m direct, longer if you route via the Bay of Kotor for scenery. Most bookings are airport-bound (TGD flights) or onward connections to Lake Skadar, Albania, or Kosovo. Podgorica itself is a compact modern city that most travellers pass through rather than visit as a destination.
Your driver leaves Dubrovnik south on the D8 past Cavtat and Dubrovnik Airport. At Debeli Brijeg / Karasovići you cross into Montenegro — 5–15 minutes on a normal day. Two route options split here: the scenic coastal road around Boka Kotorska (through Herceg Novi, Perast, Kotor, and over the Lovćen mountain road — 3h 30m with stops) or the direct inland route via the Sozina Tunnel (4.2 km, opened 2005) that saves 40 minutes. Most airport-bound transfers use the direct route; sightseeing bookings take the bay road.
Kotor Old Town is the logical long-stop: UNESCO-listed walled core, San Giovanni fortress hike (1,350 steps), Cathedral of Saint Tryphon — 90 min to 4 hours depending on depth. Lake Skadar National Park, 15 km south of Podgorica, is the largest lake in Southern Europe — boat tours from Virpazar run April–October through wetlands with pelicans, monasteries on islets, and family-run wineries on the lake shore. Cetinje, Montenegro’s old royal capital 40 min from Podgorica, has the Biljarda palace and national museums.
Podgorica itself is hottest capital in the Balkans in summer — 35–40°C common July–August. Shoulder seasons are ideal for any stops along the way. Border queues at Debeli Brijeg can push 30–60 min on summer Saturdays; the inland route bypasses the worst coastal congestion. Winter is quiet and fast end-to-end.
Our driver drops at any Podgorica address: hotels in the Nova Varoš modern quarter, the Stara Varoš old town with Clock Tower and Osmanagić Mosque, or Podgorica Airport (TGD) 12 km southeast of centre. For onward travel: Lake Skadar 15 km (20 min), Cetinje 40 km (45 min), Budva 60 km (1h via Sozina), Albanian border at Božaj 25 km (25 min). Many guests use Podgorica as an arrival gateway, staying 1 night before continuing south to the coast or into Albania.
Direct bus Dubrovnik–Podgorica runs 2–3 times daily, takes 4–5 hours, costs €20–30 per person. No train. Rental cars with cross-border insurance (€50–80/day) plus mountain road driving to Kotor and Lovćen. Private transfer is door-to-door, stops at Kotor or Lake Skadar on request, and for flight-connecting guests (TGD departures) we recommend 5-hour buffer before international check-in.
Everything specific to this route.
About 2 hours 45 minutes (160 km). One border crossing adds 5–20 minutes. With a Kotor stop, plan for 3.5 hours.
Yes—the road passes right above the lake. Your driver can stop at the famous Rijeka Crnojevica viewpoint for photos. For a longer visit with a boat trip, allow an extra hour.

Montenegro's capital is compact and walkable. The Moraca river runs through the centre, and there are Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian quarters. It's a gateway to Durmitor National Park.

"Fantastic route. The Bay of Kotor was beautiful and the Lake Skadar viewpoint was a total surprise—I had no idea such a vast lake existed here. At our hotel before lunch."
"Booked the airport transfer. Driver waiting at arrivals, clean car, cold water. Border was smooth and the scenery was incredible."
"Stopped in Kotor for a walk and at Lake Skadar for photos. Both stops made the journey feel like a sightseeing tour, not just a transfer. Driver was knowledgeable and friendly."
