Heading back? Herceg Novi to Dubrovnik follows the same coastal road in reverse.
Book Herceg Novi → Dubrovnik →Dubrovnik to Herceg Novi is our shortest cross-border transfer — just 45 km south along the Adriatic coast, one border at Debeli Brijeg, about 1 hour end-to-end. Herceg Novi sits at the mouth of Boka Kotorska (Bay of Kotor) and serves as the gateway town to Montenegro’s coast. Most bookings are one-way for travellers heading to the Kotor bay area, though it’s also a popular half-day round-trip excursion from Dubrovnik.
Your driver heads south from Dubrovnik on the D8 through Cavtat and past Dubrovnik Airport (DBV). The border crossing is at Karasovići (Croatia) / Debeli Brijeg (Montenegro) — 5–15 minutes in off-peak, 30–60 on summer Saturdays. Just past the border, the road drops down to the coast and Herceg Novi appears ahead on the bay shore. The whole drive is under an hour when borders are light.
Herceg Novi is compact and walkable. The highlights are Kanli Kula (Bloody Tower) — an Ottoman-Venetian fortress above the old town with bay views and summer concerts — and Forte Mare on the waterfront, both dating to the 14th–17th centuries. Savina Monastery on a hillside just east of the town has 11th-century Orthodox heritage and mild-climate gardens. The old town itself is small — 60–90 minutes covers Kanli Kula, Forte Mare, and the waterfront. For onward travel: Perast 20 km east (20 min), Kotor 30 km east (35 min), Tivat 25 km southeast (30 min via ferry, 50 min around).
Herceg Novi has one of Montenegro’s mildest microclimates — figs, mimosas, and palm trees dominate. The mimosa festival in February is the town’s signature event. Summer is pleasant (less crowded than Kotor or Budva), shoulder seasons are ideal, winter the town stays open with most restaurants and cafes running. Border queues at Debeli Brijeg can push 30–60 min on summer Saturdays.
Direct bus Dubrovnik–Herceg Novi runs twice daily, takes 2 hours, and costs €10–15 per person — workable but drops you at the distant bus station with no luggage flexibility. Rental cars carry the €50–80/day cross-border insurance. Private transfer is door-to-door from any Dubrovnik address (or DBV airport with flight tracking) to any Herceg Novi address in about an hour. Many guests book this as a half-day excursion — driver drops and waits 3–4 hours, then returns to Dubrovnik by evening.

Absolutely—it's right on the way. A charming harbour town with a seafront promenade and excellent cafes. A coffee stop adds about 15 minutes.
A historic resort town at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. Stone fortresses, palm-lined squares, and a long seafront promenade. Quieter and more relaxed than Dubrovnik with excellent restaurants.
