Heading to Dubrovnik? Ulcinj to Dubrovnik follows the Montenegrin coast north in reverse.
Book Ulcinj → Dubrovnik →Dubrovnik to Ulcinj is Montenegro’s longest coastal transfer — 165 km all the way south past Kotor, Budva, and Bar to the Albanian border region. About 3 hours direct. Ulcinj is Montenegro’s southernmost coastal town, with a distinct Ottoman-era Albanian cultural character (the population is majority Albanian) and Velika Plaža — a 13 km sandy beach unique on a coast otherwise defined by pebbles.
Your driver heads south from Dubrovnik on the D8, crosses into Montenegro at Debeli Brijeg, and takes the inland route via Sozina Tunnel past Podgorica — faster than the bay road for this long distance. From Podgorica the road follows the Bar corridor along the coast south through Petrovac and Bar before reaching Ulcinj. Coastal road via Kotor bay adds 1h but offers the scenery payoff through Perast and Budva.
Ulcinj’s medieval Stari Grad (Old Town) sits on a rocky peninsula above the harbour — 15th-century walls, narrow lanes, and the restored pirate-era buildings (Ulcinj was a major Ottoman pirate port in the 16th century). Velika Plaža (Long Beach) stretches 13 km south — Montenegro’s only genuinely sandy beach, popular with Albanian holidaymakers and kitesurfers (Ada Bojana river mouth has world-class wind conditions July–August). Mala Plaža in the old town harbour is the compact centre option. For onward travel: Bar 28 km north (30 min), Albanian border at Sučka 25 km south (30 min), Shkodër (Albania) 80 km south (1h 15m), Podgorica 80 km north.
Direct bus Dubrovnik→Ulcinj is rare — typically a change in Budva or Bar (4–5 hours). No train. Rental cars work but carry cross-border insurance. Private transfer is door-to-door; for summer Velika Plaža beach holidays it’s the practical option, and we can include a Kotor or Budva sightseeing stop if you want to turn it into a scenic day.

Montenegro's southernmost town has a distinctly different feel—Ottoman architecture, Albanian-speaking locals, mosques, and 13 km of sandy beach at Velika Plaza. Where the Balkans and Mediterranean blur.
If you like wild beaches, yes. A river delta island with a long sandy beach, kitesurfing, and rustic fish restaurants on stilts. Your driver can take you right to the bridge.

Ruins of a medieval town—churches, fortifications, a hammam, and a famously ancient olive tree. Uncrowded and atmospheric, about 30 minutes before Ulcinj.
"What a discovery Ulcinj was. The driver suggested Old Bar—the ruins were fascinating and the ancient olive tree incredible. Ulcinj itself felt like a different country. Loved it."
"Longish drive but the coast was stunning the whole way. Driver was great company and full of local knowledge. Arrived at Velika Plaza for a late swim. Perfect day."
