Adriatic to alpine. A full-day drive up the Croatian coast and through the Dinaric Alps to Slovenia's charming capital—a green, walkable city straddling the Ljubljanica river beneath a hilltop castle.
Drive from Dubrovnik to Ljubljana in approximately 6h 30m. Private transfer from €705 per vehicle, all-inclusive — fuel, tolls, English-speaking driver, door-to-door.
Pickup from your hotel, apartment, or Dubrovnik Airport (DBV). Early departure recommended.
The mid-coast stop. Walk through the 1,700-year-old Roman palace that became a living city, stroll the Riva waterfront, or grab a coffee in Peristil square. The perfect break after the first leg.
The A1 motorway climbs from the coast through tunnels and mountain passes. The landscape shifts from Mediterranean to continental—vineyards, rolling hills, and forests replace palm trees and limestone.
Croatia's capital is a slight detour off the direct route. A 30-minute walk through the Upper Town (Gornji Grad) with its cathedral, St. Mark's Church, and panoramic views gives you a taste of this underrated city.
Arrive at your hotel or apartment in Ljubljana—Old Town, Metelkova, or the city centre. Driver drops you at the door.

Heading south? Ljubljana to Dubrovnik reverses this route from the Alps back to the Adriatic.
Book Ljubljana → Dubrovnik →Dubrovnik to Ljubljana is one of our longest single-leg transfers — 600 km from the Adriatic coast to Slovenia’s capital, about 7 hours on the A1 motorway and through Zagreb onward. Two border crossings — Pelješac Bridge to Croatian mainland (Schengen-internal since 2023) and Croatia-Slovenia at Bregana / Obrežje. Since both Croatia and Slovenia are now Schengen members, border checks are passport-only with no customs.
Your driver heads north from Dubrovnik on the D8, crosses the Pelješac Bridge (2022), and joins the A1 motorway at Ploče. The A1 runs the full length of Croatia to Zagreb (600 km of motorway) before turning west onto the A3 toward Slovenia. The Bregana border with Slovenia is Schengen-internal — a passport check only. On the Slovenian side, the A2 motorway runs west to Ljubljana past Bregana and Novo Mesto. Our driver handles the Slovenian motorway vignette (required on all Slovenian highways) — it’s included in your transfer price.
For a 7-hour drive at least one substantial stop makes sense. Split for Diocletian’s Palace (1h lunch), Zadar for the Sea Organ and Roman forum, or Plitvice Lakes National Park as a full-day addition (adds 3–4 hours). For shorter pauses: Makarska Riviera coastal overview, Karlovac on the approach to Zagreb, or Zagreb itself with a quick Upper Town walk (Trg Ban Jelačića, St Mark’s Church, Dolac market).
Summer Saturdays the A1 around Split slows significantly — add 1–2 hours. Shoulder seasons (May–June, September) are ideal. Winter the route is fast but Slovenian mountain sections occasionally have snow; our drivers use winter tyres October through April.
Ljubljana is one of Europe’s most walkable capitals — the medieval old town around Prešeren Square, Jože Plečnik’s architectural riverfront (Triple Bridge, Central Market, National Library), hilltop Ljubljana Castle with funicular, and the famous dragons on Zmajski Most (Dragon Bridge). Our driver drops at any address. Lake Bled is 50 km northwest (45 min) — a common onward day trip or drop-off alternative. For onward travel: Ljubljana Airport (LJU) 25 km north (30 min), Vienna 380 km north, Venice 240 km west, Salzburg 280 km northwest.
No direct bus — Dubrovnik–Ljubljana requires a change in Zagreb (10–12 hours total). No direct train. Flights via Zagreb or Vienna (6–10 hours door-to-door). Rental cars work but 7 hours of driving with two borders and the Slovenian vignette is a lot. Private transfer is door-to-door, handles all tolls and vignette, allows substantial meal stops, and many guests split into 2 days with a Zagreb overnight.
Everything specific to this route.
About 6 hours 30 minutes (600 km). No border checks (Croatia and Slovenia are both Schengen). With stops, plan for 7.5–8.5 hours.
No passport checks. Both countries are in the EU Schengen area. You drive straight through.
Yes—Split is roughly the halfway point and the natural place to break the drive. A 30–45 minute walk through the Roman palace is enough for the highlights.
Yes. Mostly motorway, comfortable vehicle with A/C and and stops break it up nicely. Many clients prefer it to flying with connections.
Yes. Early flights work best. We meet you at arrivals and head straight north.
A compact, green capital with a riverside old town, hilltop castle, and excellent food scene. Very walkable—the entire centre is pedestrianised. Often called one of Europe's most liveable cities.
"Stopped in Split for Diocletian's Palace—a highlight in itself. Then motorway to Ljubljana where the castle and river cafes were waiting. Incredible day of travel."
"Long drive but the scenery from coast to mountains was worth it. Driver was excellent—professional, friendly, and full of recommendations for Ljubljana. Arrived relaxed."
"Family of five in the minivan. Kids were comfortable, we had snacks, and the Split stop kept everyone happy. Ljubljana by evening. Great service."
