Heading south? Pula to Dubrovnik reverses this grand Croatian traverse.
Book Pula → Dubrovnik →Dubrovnik to Pula is Croatia’s longest coast-to-coast route — 720 km from the UNESCO walled Adriatic city in the south to the Istrian peninsula’s Roman capital in the north-west. About 8-9 hours direct on the A1/A8/A9 via Split, Zadar and Rijeka. Both cities have UNESCO connections: Dubrovnik for its Old Town walls (inscribed 1979), Pula for one of the six best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world (1st century AD, held 23,000 spectators, still used for concerts and the Pula Film Festival). Entirely within Croatia — no borders since Croatia joined Schengen in 2023.
A1 motorway north from Dubrovnik via the Pelješac Bridge (opened July 2022), continuing past Split, Šibenik, Zadar and Senj into Rijeka. From Rijeka the A8 crosses the Učka tunnel (5 km, under the Učka massif) into Istria, then A9 runs south down the peninsula to Pula.
Drop-off at your address. Must-see: Pula Arena (Roman amphitheatre, the only one with all four side towers preserved), Temple of Augustus on the forum, Arch of the Sergii (29-27 BC), Pula Cathedral, Venetian fortress Kastel. Brijuni National Park (14 islands, former Tito retreat) accessed by boat from Fažana 8 km north. Pula Airport (PUY) is 6 km north-east.
Bus Dubrovnik–Pula takes 12-14 hours with a Zagreb or Split change; no direct train. Flights via Zagreb are 3-4 hours door-to-door. Private car at 8-9 hours is mainly for travellers making a sightseeing day of the Adriatic drive (Zadar Sea Organ, Plitvice Lakes detour, Opatija) or with heavy luggage. Most bookings are one-way relocations.
Everything specific to this route.
About 7 hours 30 minutes (680 km). No border crossings—entirely within Croatia. With stops in Split and Plitvice, plan for 9–10 hours.
No—the full route stays within Croatia on the A1 motorway.
Yes to both. Split is roughly one-third of the way and Plitvice is about two-thirds. Together they break the day into manageable segments.
A superbly preserved Roman amphitheatre (one of the six largest in the world), Roman temples, Venetian fortresses, and a vibrant waterfront. Istria is also Italy's food and wine rival—truffles, olive oil, and Malvazija wine.
It's a full day, but the A1 motorway is excellent, the car is comfortable, and stops make it feel like a tour rather than a transfer. Many clients prefer it to multiple flights.
Yes—Pula Airport is about 10 minutes from the city centre. Drop-off at departures included.
"What a day—Diocletian's Palace in the morning, Plitvice's turquoise lakes in the afternoon, and Pula's amphitheatre by evening. Three World Heritage sites in one transfer. Driver was superb."
"Long drive but so worth it. The scenery changes completely—from rocky Dalmatian coast to green Istrian hills. Our driver made it easy and comfortable. Pula is a gem."
"Airport pickup at dawn, Pula by late afternoon. Split stop for lunch, Plitvice for photos. The kids loved the amphitheatre. Professional service from start to finish."
