Heading north? Sarandë to Dubrovnik follows the coast through Albania and Montenegro back to Croatia.
Book Sarandë → Dubrovnik →Dubrovnik to Sarandë is the Adriatic–to–Ionian cross-country transfer — 270 km south through Montenegro and down the full Albanian Riviera. Two borders (Croatia→Montenegro and Montenegro→Albania), about 5h 30m direct or 7–8 hours with coastal stops. Most bookings are one-way for travellers heading to Ksamil (17 km south of Sarandë), the Butrint UNESCO archaeological park, or catching the Sarandë–Corfu ferry to Greece.
Your driver heads south from Dubrovnik on the D8, crosses into Montenegro at Debeli Brijeg, and takes the inland route via the Sozina Tunnel. From Podgorica the road continues through Lake Skadar karst to the Albanian border at Hani i Hotit / Božaj. On the Albanian side, the route runs south along Lake Shkodër, through Shkodër city with its Rozafa castle, then follows the coast through the Albanian Riviera via Vlorë to Sarandë. The final Riviera stretch is the signature part — the Llogara Pass at 1,027m reveals the Ionian Sea in one dramatic moment.
Shkodër for Rozafa castle (30 min). Llogara Pass for the Ionian reveal and photo stop (15 min). Dhërmi and Himarë on the Albanian Riviera — pebble beaches and Mediterranean village character (30–60 min each). Porto Palermo for Ali Pasha’s triangular fortress just before Sarandë (20 min). A full coastal day with all four stops turns this into a 9–10 hour experience.
Albanian Riviera is seasonal — mid-June to mid-September for full beach-life operation. Shoulder months (May, late September–October) are pleasant and quieter. November–April the Riviera shuts down but Sarandë itself stays open. Llogara Pass occasionally closes in winter for snow (rare). Two borders add time; expect 30–60 min total border waits on summer Saturdays.
Sarandë faces Corfu across a 5 km strait — the Sarandë–Corfu ferry takes 30 minutes and runs 3–6 times daily in season. Butrint National Park with Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian ruins is 18 km south (25 min). Ksamil’s Caribbean-turquoise beaches are 17 km south (20 min). Blue Eye spring (Syri i Kaltër) is 22 km inland (30 min) — a karst spring of unknown depth. For onward travel: Corfu ferry, Greek border at Kakavija 65 km east, Gjirokastër UNESCO south 60 km.
No direct bus — requires Ulcinj or Shkodër change, 10–12 hours. No train, no flight. Rental cars manage but two borders and the winding Albanian Riviera with cross-border insurance surcharges are demanding. Private transfer is door-to-door, handles both borders, and for Corfu-ferry-bound guests we time pickup to the sailing schedule.
Everything specific to this route.
About 6 hours 30 minutes (400 km). Two border crossings. With a Butrint stop, plan for 7–8 hours.
EU, UK, US, Canadian, and Australian citizens enter visa-free. Valid passport required. Driver handles all border paperwork.
Absolutely—it's one of the best archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. Greek, Roman, and Byzantine ruins on a beautiful lagoon peninsula. Allow 45–60 minutes. Entrance about €10.
Two—Croatia to Montenegro, then Montenegro to Albania. Driver handles documents at both crossings.
A horseshoe bay facing Corfu with a palm-lined promenade, fresh seafood restaurants, and warm Albanian hospitality. Much more affordable than Croatia. The sunsets are spectacular.
Yes. Early flights recommended. We meet you at arrivals and drive south through three countries to Sarandë.
"Butrint was an absolute revelation—Roman ruins in a lagoon setting. Then Sarandë was warm, welcoming, and incredibly affordable. The driver made two border crossings feel effortless."
"Three countries in one day! The coast got more beautiful the further south we went. Sarandë is a hidden gem—great food, friendly people, and the water is crystal clear."
"Clean car, professional driver, smooth border crossings. We stopped at Ksamil for a quick swim and arrived in Sarandë for sunset dinner on the promenade. Perfect."
