Heading west? Skopje to Dubrovnik reverses this route through Albania and Montenegro to the coast.
Book Skopje → Dubrovnik →Dubrovnik to Skopje is an 800-km multi-country long-haul from Croatia’s UNESCO walled Adriatic city to the capital of North Macedonia on the Vardar river. About 10-12 hours direct via Montenegro, Albania and the SH1/SH4 into Macedonia. Skopje is the birthplace of Mother Teresa (born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910) and home to the massive “Skopje 2014” urban renewal project — a controversial decade-long installation of neo-classical monuments, statues (Alexander the Great on a 22-m column in Macedonia Square is the headline), and baroque facades over Yugoslav-era modernist buildings.
From Dubrovnik south through Montenegro to Podgorica, then south-east via Lake Skadar to the Albanian border at Hani i Hotit. Inside Albania the SH1 runs south through Shkodër and Tirana, then the SH4 turns east through Elbasan and Librazhd to the Macedonian border at Qafa e Thanës near Lake Ohrid. From there the SH4/E65 runs east through Struga, Kichevo and Tetovo to Skopje.
Drop-off at your address. Must-see: Macedonia Square with the Alexander the Great monument, Stone Bridge (Ottoman-era arched bridge across the Vardar), Old Bazaar (Čaršija, one of the largest in the Balkans), Mustafa Pasha Mosque (1492), Kale Fortress above the old town, and the Memorial House of Mother Teresa (marking her birthplace). Skopje International Airport (SKP) is 20 km south-east. Currency: Macedonian denar (MKD).
No direct bus or train Dubrovnik–Skopje exists. Public transport requires 3+ changes and 18-22 hours. Flights require a connection via Istanbul or Belgrade. Private car at 10-12 hours is the only same-day option.

Eclectic and fascinating. An Ottoman bazaar, a Roman stone bridge, Baroque-revival statues, brutalist architecture—all in one walkable city. Great food scene and very affordable.
