Heading back? Hvar to Split reverses this route with the same door-to-door convenience.
Book Hvar → Split →Split to Hvar combines a short drive and a ferry crossing as one seamless door-to-door service — we handle the car, the ferry tickets, and the island-side drive on Hvar itself. There are two practical routings: (1) short drive to Split passenger port (2 km) and Jadrolinija or Kapetan Luka catamaran direct to Hvar town harbour (55 minutes); or (2) drive 45 km south-east to Drvenik, car ferry to Sučuraj on Hvar’s eastern tip, then drive west across the island to Hvar town. The catamaran option is faster and the default in summer; the car ferry is used in winter or when the catamaran is cancelled for bura wind. Your driver travels with you and your luggage on the crossing — you do not change vehicles.
Option 1 (default): Split to Gat Svetog Duje (passenger port at the foot of the Riva), 5-10 minutes depending on where in Split you start. Catamarans to Hvar town leave typically 4-6 times a day in season on the Jadrolinija and Kapetan Luka/Krilo lines; 55 minutes crossing. Option 2: the D8 south past Omiš and the Cetina river canyon to Drvenik; Jadrolinija car ferry Drvenik–Sučuraj runs hourly in summer, 30 minutes crossing. Then it is a 1h 15m drive west across Hvar through Jelsa and Stari Grad to Hvar town on the south-west tip.
Hvar island is 68 km long and famous for lavender (bloom mid-June), Dalmatian wine (Plavac Mali reds from Sveta Nedelja and Ivan Dolac), and the longest documented sunshine record in Croatia (over 2,800 hours per year). Hvar town is the island’s glamour capital — Venetian-era architecture, a 16th-century cathedral, the oldest public theatre in Europe (1612) on Pjača square, and the Fortica Spanjola fortress above the town with the classic Pakleni-islands view. Other Hvar destinations: Stari Grad (UNESCO for its 2,400-year-old Greek colonist field system), Jelsa, and the remote south coast villages of Sveta Nedelja and Ivan Dolac.
Hvar season runs May to October. July-August are peak — the Riva and Pjača see heavy yacht and cruise traffic, Carpe Diem and Hula Hula nightlife fill every table, and hotels double in price. June and September are the sweet spot: 26–28°C water, full bar and restaurant calendar, manageable crowds. Lavender bloom peaks around June 15. Catamaran schedules thin to 1-2 sailings per day from November-April and weather cancellations become more likely in winter bura wind — our drivers flag alternatives or reschedule.
Catamarans dock at Hvar town harbour — directly in front of the Riva, the main square, and within 5 minutes’ walk of most old-town hotels. The old town itself is pedestrian; we drop luggage at the harbour and our driver arranges porter transfer if needed. Must-see: the Venetian-era Pjača (largest old-town square in Dalmatia), the Arsenal with its historic theatre, the Franciscan Monastery (Last Supper painting by Matteo Rosselli), and the Fortica climb. Hvar town is compact enough that almost everything is within 10 minutes’ walk of the harbour.
Getting yourself, your luggage and your family from a Split hotel to the correct gate at Gat Svetog Duje on time, with the right ticket, and without paying €20/day to park, is reliably stressful in peak season. Private transfer handles port pickup, ferry ticketing, luggage, and the island-side drive — one booking, one price, one driver who stays with you. For groups of three or more, it pays for itself versus taxi + ferry ticket + parking + stress, and the door-to-door guarantee beats the catamaran’s first-come-first-seated scramble.
