Heading to Split? Kotor to Split follows the bay road and coast in reverse.
Book Kotor → Split →Split to Kotor is one of the most spectacular coastal drives on the eastern Adriatic — 380 km of continuous shoreline from Croatia’s Roman capital of Dalmatia to the walled medieval port at the head of Boka Kotorska, Europe’s only ria inlet. The route crosses the Pelješac Bridge (opened July 2022, bypassing the former Neum bottleneck), threads past Dubrovnik, crosses into Montenegro at Debeli Brijeg, and then wraps around the Bay of Kotor past Herceg Novi, Risan and Perast to Kotor itself. At 4h 45m direct or a full day with sightseeing, it is better treated as an experience than a transit — with Dubrovnik and Perast as natural stops.
From Split’s Diocletian’s Palace the A1 motorway runs south-east via Omiš (Cetina river mouth) and Makarska under Biokovo’s wall. At Ploče you drop onto the D8 (Jadranska Magistrala) across the Neretva delta, then cross the Pelješac Bridge onto the peninsula, drive its length, and rejoin the mainland via the new connector road near Ston. Past Dubrovnik the D8 continues south to the Montenegrin border at Debeli Brijeg/Karaš-Sutorina. Inside Montenegro the road descends to Herceg Novi, then follows the bay’s northern shore through Kamenari (where the 5-minute Verige-strait ferry offers an optional shortcut), Risan and Perast into Kotor.
Ston (Pelješac Peninsula) — 5.5-km medieval defensive wall, oyster beds in Mali Ston bay, and Kapetanova Kuća tasting-restaurant; 45-minute stop. Dubrovnik is the obvious mid-route break — 220 km from Split, a classic 2-hour Old Town walk (Stradun, Rector’s Palace, Pile Gate, and the city walls). Past the border, Perast deserves 30-45 minutes: 17 baroque palazzi, St. Nicholas’ bell tower, and taxi-boats to Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela), the man-made island founded in 1452 and home to 2,500 silver votive plaques. The Vrmac viewpoint above the Verige strait gives the Bay of Kotor’s iconic aerial photograph.
May-June and September-early October are ideal — warm bay, full cruise-ship and restaurant schedules, but no August crush. Summer Saturdays can bring 3-4 cruise ships into Kotor’s old town at once (1.3M cruise passengers in 2023), so we aim for early morning or late afternoon arrival. The Dubrovnik-Montenegro border at Debeli Brijeg can queue 15-30 minutes in August; our drivers track live queue reports. Winter driving is easy along the coast (mild climate, no snow) but the Kotor city-walls climb to San Giovanni fortress gets slippery in rain.
Kotor’s UNESCO-listed old town (listed 1979) is fully pedestrian — we drop at the Sea Gate (Vrata od Mora), or at your hotel in Dobrota, Muo or Prcanj lining the bay. Inside the walls: 12th-century St. Tryphon’s Cathedral, the Maritime Museum in the Grgurina Palace, and the 1,350-step climb up to San Giovanni fortress for the panorama. Tivat Airport (TIV) is 8 km if you continue by air; Podgorica Airport (TGD) is 90 km. Currency is the Euro (Montenegro uses it unilaterally outside the Eurozone).
Bus Split–Kotor takes 8-10 hours with a change in Dubrovnik, rigid schedules and luggage handoffs; no train. Private transfer does it in one day with Dubrovnik and Perast as proper stops rather than drive-bys, handles both the Croatia-Schengen exit and Montenegro entry paperwork, and drops at Kotor’s pedestrian gate — a 10-minute final walk no bus can shortcut.
