Heading south? Pula to Split reverses this route from Istria back to Dalmatia.
Book Pula → Split →Split to Pula is 500 km of Croatian coast on the A1/A8/A9 motorway — from Dalmatia’s Roman capital of Diocletian’s Palace (4th century AD, now the living heart of Split’s UNESCO-listed old town) to Istria’s Roman harbour with its spectacular 1st-century amphitheatre (Arena, still used for concerts and the Pula Film Festival). About 5-6 hours direct, entirely within Croatia.
A1 motorway north from Split via Šibenik, Zadar, Senj and past Plitvice Lakes toward Rijeka (Croatia’s third-largest city and major port). From Rijeka the A8 crosses the Učka tunnel (5 km under the Učka massif) into Istria, then A9 runs the length of the peninsula south to Pula at the tip.
Zadar (160 km from Split) for a 1-hour Sea Organ and Salutation-to-the-Sun photo stop. Plitvice Lakes National Park (UNESCO) 50 km off the A1 for a 3-hour detour. Opatija on the Kvarner coast (Habsburg belle-époque seaside resort) is worth a 30-minute coffee stop. Rovinj (Venetian-era fishing town) is 35 km off the A9 before Pula.
Drop-off at your address. Must-see: Pula Arena (Roman amphitheatre, one of six best-preserved worldwide, 23,000-seat capacity), Temple of Augustus, Arch of the Sergii (29-27 BC). Brijuni National Park (former Tito retreat) accessed by boat from Fažana 8 km north. Pula Airport (PUY) is 6 km north-east.
Bus Split–Pula runs 2-3 times daily and takes 7-8 hours with a Rijeka change. Private car at 5-6 hours with flexible stops at Zadar, Plitvice or Rovinj turns the corridor into a mini-Croatian sightseeing circuit.
Everything specific to this route.

A superbly preserved Roman amphitheatre (one of the six largest in the world), Roman temples, and Venetian fortresses. Istria is also famed for truffles, olive oil, and Malvazija wine.
Yes. We meet you at SPU arrivals and head north immediately.
The Sea Organ alone is worth the detour—waves create music through pipes built into the waterfront. The old town is compact and walkable in 20–30 minutes.
