Heading south? Zagreb to Split reverses this motorway route from the capital to the coast.
Book Zagreb → Split →Split to Zagreb is Croatia’s defining coast-to-capital route — 410 km on the A1 motorway that connects Dalmatia to the continental heart of the country. It crosses the Dinaric Alps via two of Croatia’s longest highway tunnels (Sveti Rok 5.7 km, Mala Kapela 5.8 km), swings through the karst of Lika, and delivers you to the A3 in Zagreb’s southern suburbs. It is entirely within Croatia, entirely motorway, entirely included-toll in our price. The popular version of this transfer includes a 3-4 hour Plitvice Lakes stop mid-route, turning a 4h 30m drive into a full natural-wonder day trip.
From Diocletian’s Palace in Split the A1 heads inland past Solin (Roman Salona ruins), climbs the Dinara range via the Sveti Rok tunnel, and enters the limestone karst of Lika — vast grassy plateau, clustered stone-roofed villages, occasional bear and wolf country. Plitvice Lakes is signposted off exit 16 (Otoačac); from there it is a 30-km secondary road. Continuing north, the A1 crosses the Kapela mountain range via the Mala Kapela tunnel, passes Karlovac (where four rivers meet) and joins the A3 approaches into Zagreb from the south.
Plitvice Lakes (UNESCO 1979) is the headline stop — 16 turquoise lakes linked by 78 m of cascading tufa waterfalls, with 18 km of wooden boardwalks threading through the park. Budget 3-4 hours for Routes C or H which cover the Upper and Lower lakes. Alternate mid-route options: Krka National Park (near Šibenik, closer to Split side) for Skradinski buk waterfall; Zadar (90 km north of Split) for the Sea Organ and Salutation to the Sun installations; or Karlovac’s Aquatika freshwater-aquarium if travelling with children.
May-October is Plitvice peak: green ferns, full cascades, high visitor numbers (up to 15,000 per day in August). Book Plitvice tickets in advance in summer — entry is time-slotted. Spring (April-May) has the highest water flow from snowmelt; autumn (October) is photographic gold with red-and-yellow beech canopy. Winter transforms the park into a frozen-waterfall wonderland but many boardwalk sections close for safety. The A1 motorway is plowed year-round; winter tyres required November 15 - April 15.
Drop-off at any address across Zagreb. The old town splits into Donji Grad (Lower Town, 19th-century boulevards around Ban Jelačić Square) and Gornji Grad (Upper Town, medieval core with St. Mark’s Church tile-roof, Lotrščak Tower and the iconic funicular — the world’s shortest public funicular at 66 m). Highlights: Dolac market, Museum of Broken Relationships, Mirogoj Cemetery arcade, Tkalčićeva street cafes. Zagreb Airport (ZAG) is 15 km south of the centre. Croatia uses the Euro as of January 2023.
Train Split–Zagreb is 6-8 hours with limited daily schedules; buses take 5-6 hours with no flexibility. A private car does it in 4h 30m door-to-door with a Plitvice stop that would otherwise require a separate rental car or group tour. For travellers on a two-city Croatia itinerary, this transfer collapses what would be a full lost day into a single productive travel day with a major national park included.
Everything specific to this route.
About 4 hours 30 minutes (410 km) on the A1 motorway. No border crossings. With a Plitvice stop, plan for 5.5–6 hours.
Yes—the park entrance is just off the motorway about two-thirds of the way. A 20–30 minute viewpoint stop or a full 3–4 hour visit.
No—entirely within Croatia on the A1 motorway.
Yes—ZAG is about 20 minutes from the city centre. Drop-off at departures included.
When you factor in airport time at both ends, the drive is often comparable. Plus door-to-door convenience, luggage freedom, and the option to stop at Plitvice. For 2+ passengers, the cost per person is very competitive with flights.
Upper Town with St Mark's colourful roof, Dolac farmers' market, the Museum of Broken Relationships, and the cafe culture of Tkalciceva street.
"Smooth motorway drive, beautiful mountain scenery. Plitvice stop was the highlight—we did the quick viewpoint and it was breathtaking. In Zagreb by 3 PM. Excellent driver."
"With three kids and a mountain of luggage, this was so much easier than flying. A/C, space, stops when we needed them. Zagreb by afternoon. Will use for the return trip."
"From Split Airport to our Zagreb hotel—professional service from start to finish. The Velebit mountain views from the motorway were stunning. Highly recommended."
