Split to Banja Luka is a 300-km cross-border transfer from Croatia’s Dalmatian capital under Marjan Hill to the administrative capital of the Republika Srpska entity of Bosnia on the Vrbas river. About 4-5 hours direct, one border crossing. Banja Luka is a low-key surprise — tree-lined European city of cafes, restored Ottoman Ferhadija Mosque (blown up 1993, faithfully rebuilt and reopened 2016), and the Habsburg-era Banski Dvor cultural palace, with near-zero tourist density.

The route itself

Two options. Direct via the A1 motorway north from Split to Karlovac in Croatia, then east on secondary roads to the border at Strmica/Bosansko Grahovo, then via Jajce to Banja Luka. Scenic via Livno and the Dinara range, crossing at Kamensko into Bosnia and running through central-Bosnian old towns. Both 4-5 hours; scenic routing adds Jajce’s town-centre waterfall as a sightseeing bonus.

Must-see: Ferhadija Mosque (1579 Ottoman masterpiece rebuilt 2016), Banski Dvor cultural palace, Kastel fortress on the Vrbas, the new Orthodox Cathedral of Christ the Saviour with gold-leaf domes.
