Heading to Split? Banja Luka to Split reverses this route from the mountains to the coast.
Book Banja Luka → Split →Split to Banja Luka is a 300-km cross-border transfer from Croatia’s Dalmatian capital under Marjan Hill to the administrative capital of the Republika Srpska entity of Bosnia on the Vrbas river. About 4-5 hours direct, one border crossing. Banja Luka is a low-key surprise — tree-lined European city of cafes, restored Ottoman Ferhadija Mosque (blown up 1993, faithfully rebuilt and reopened 2016), and the Habsburg-era Banski Dvor cultural palace, with near-zero tourist density.
Two options. Direct via the A1 motorway north from Split to Karlovac in Croatia, then east on secondary roads to the border at Strmica/Bosansko Grahovo, then via Jajce to Banja Luka. Scenic via Livno and the Dinara range, crossing at Kamensko into Bosnia and running through central-Bosnian old towns. Both 4-5 hours; scenic routing adds Jajce’s town-centre waterfall as a sightseeing bonus.
Drop-off at your address. Must-see: Ferhadija Mosque (1579 Ottoman masterpiece rebuilt 2016), Banski Dvor cultural palace, Kastel fortress on the Vrbas, the new Orthodox Cathedral of Christ the Saviour with gold-leaf domes. Banja Luka International Airport (BNX) is 18 km north-east — Bosnia’s second-busiest.
Bus Split–Banja Luka runs once or twice daily and takes 6-7 hours via Zagreb. Private car at 4-5 hours direct is significantly faster. Common booking for travellers flying into Banja Luka airport for onward Bosnian itineraries.

A spectacular cliffside fortress above Split—used as Meereen in Game of Thrones. The views are stunning. Only 15 km from Split, so it adds little time to the route.
Herds of wild horses roam the Livno karst plateau. They're descended from horses released after mechanisation. A unique and photogenic Bosnian phenomenon.
