Heading to Dubrovnik? Hvar to Dubrovnik reverses this route with ferry and coastal drive back south.
Book Hvar → Dubrovnik →Dubrovnik to Hvar is a two-leg journey: drive + ferry. Our driver takes you 230 km north up the Dalmatian coast to Split port, then you board the Jadrolinija car ferry (or Krilo catamaran) across to Hvar — either the deep-water ferry port at Stari Grad or the more central Hvar Town harbour depending on sailing. Total time door-to-door is 5–6 hours including the ferry crossing. This is a Croatia-only trip since the Pelješac Bridge (2022) eliminated the old Neum detour — no border crossings.
Your driver leaves Dubrovnik north on the D8 and crosses the Pelješac Bridge onto the A1 motorway. The motorway runs to Split, passing Makarska Riviera and Omiš. In Split you transfer to the ferry at Trajektna Luka port — five minutes from the Riva waterfront. Two ferry options: Jadrolinija car ferry to Stari Grad (2 hours, takes your luggage for free) or the Krilo Shipping catamaran direct to Hvar Town (1 hour, foot passengers only). Summer sailings run 4–6 times daily; winter drops to 2–3.
Ston, 90 minutes in, is the classic stop — the Great Wall of Ston (Europe’s longest stone fortification after China’s Great Wall) and some of the Mediterranean’s best oysters at Kapetanova Kuća. A Pelješac wine tasting works alongside — Dingač and Postup (Plavac Mali grape) are Croatia’s most prized reds. Time the Ston stop to leave Split by the ferry you want — most guests aim for the 13:00 or 15:00 sailing.
Peak season July–August the Split–Hvar ferries and catamarans sell out days in advance; book ferry tickets before you book the transfer, and work backwards from your sailing time. Shoulder seasons (late May–June, September) are ideal: fewer crowds on Hvar, full ferry schedule, walk-on tickets usually available. Winter (Nov–April) the ferry schedule reduces; book ahead and verify with driver.
Stari Grad (Hvar’s ferry port) and Hvar Town are on opposite ends of the island — a 20-minute bus or taxi ride between them. Stari Grad is the quieter historic side (UNESCO-listed Stari Grad Plain, 4th-century BC Greek settlement). Hvar Town is the nightlife and yacht hub (Fortica fortress, Renaissance cathedral, Pakleni Islands boat trips). If arriving by catamaran (Krilo or Jadrolinija fast line) you’ll land directly at Hvar Town harbour. For car ferry arrivals at Stari Grad, public bus runs to Hvar Town about hourly.
Dubrovnik→Hvar by public transport means bus to Split (4–5 hours, €25) + ferry (€6–25 per person depending on type). Works but you handle the Split transfer and ferry port logistics yourself. Some seasonal direct Dubrovnik→Hvar catamarans exist (Nona Ana, Krilo) at €30–40 per person but are May-September only. Private transfer drops you at the Split ferry port at the exact time you need, handles your luggage, and for 2+ passengers is usually competitive on price per person including bus fare comparisons.

About 5 hours total including the 35-minute ferry crossing. With a Ston stop, plan for about 5.5–6 hours.
The ferry ticket is an additional cost (approximately €30–40 for the car and passengers). Your driver purchases the tickets and handles boarding.
You can stay in the car or walk up to the deck for views. The crossing is about 35 minutes—enough time for a coffee and photos of the islands.
Drvenik to Sućuraj on Hvar's eastern end. From there it's about 1 hour across the island to Hvar Town, passing through beautiful landscape.
Yes. We meet you at DBV arrivals. Early flights recommended to catch a good ferry connection.
Rare in summer. If weather cancels the ferry, your driver will arrange an alternative route or reschedule. We monitor ferry schedules in advance.
