Heading west? Ohrid to Dubrovnik reverses this route through Albania and Montenegro to the Adriatic.
Book Ohrid → Dubrovnik →Dubrovnik to Ohrid is a 620-km multi-country drive from Croatia’s UNESCO walled Adriatic city to the UNESCO-listed Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia — one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe (estimated 1.36 million years old, 287 m deep). Ohrid town itself is also UNESCO-listed for its 365 churches, the Plaoshnik archaeological complex (first Slavic university founded by Saint Clement of Ohrid in AD 886), and the iconic hillside Church of St. John at Kaneo above the lake. The drive is 9-10 hours via Montenegro, Albania and across Lake Ohrid’s western shore. Three border crossings.
Dubrovnik south to Debeli Brijeg border into Montenegro, through Herceg Novi and Podgorica to the Albanian border at Hani i Hotit. Inside Albania the SH1 runs south through Shkodër, Tirana and Elbasan to the Macedonian border at Qafa e Thanës. Inside North Macedonia the road runs along Lake Ohrid’s north-west shore past Saint Naum monastery (at the lake’s southern tip, 18 km south of Ohrid town) to Ohrid itself.
Drop-off at your address. Must-see: Church of St. John at Kaneo on the cliff above the lake (one of the most photographed sites in the Balkans), Samuil’s Fortress (10th-century Bulgarian/Macedonian stronghold), Plaoshnik with the rebuilt 9th-century Saint Clement’s Church, the Ancient Theatre (Greek-Roman, 1st century BC), and the Ohrid Pearl workshops (unique pearl-making tradition using lake fish scales, only four families keep the secret). Saint Naum Monastery 30 km south is a must-see extension. Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD) is 10 km north. Currency: Macedonian denar (MKD).
No direct public transport from Dubrovnik to Ohrid exists. Bus routes require 3+ changes and 18-20 hours. Flights connect only via Istanbul or Belgrade. Private car at 9-10 hours is effectively the only same-day option.
